Ojibwe Spirit Horses Return House

A heat homecoming was ready for 4 Ojibwe Spirit Horses, an almost extinct breed that predates the American Mustang, once they arrived in Wiikwemikoong, which is Unceded Territory of the Wiikwemkong First Nation on Manitoulin Island in Northern Ontario.

In keeping with the Hamilton Spectator,  the small herd consists of three mares named Lucy, Three Sisters, and Thundercloud, in addition to a gelding known as Type Moon Dancer.

Marcia Manitowabi had been engaged on bringing the Ojibwe Spirit Horses again to her neighborhood for years. She had been in contact with one of many breed’s best-known breeders and advocates, Terry Jenkins, who operates TJ Stables in Chatham, Ontario, about getting some ponies north.

Ultimately it was agreed that Jenkins would mortgage 4 ponies to their ancestral communities for 2 years. Manitowabi, who had been working in Equine Remedy in Sudbury, has modified her focus to a standard Anishinabek-centred observe.

“For me, it’s about bringing these horses again to work to help therapeutic inside our neighborhood. I’ve witnessed firsthand how they assist us,” she tells the Spec. “This isn’t a driving program; it’s about our individuals connecting to the horses and permitting themselves to let go. Not many individuals bear in mind the historical past of those ponies. By connecting with them, we’re reclaiming elements of ourselves that we would not have even referred to as misplaced.”

She’s developed her personal program known as Reflections Nanaandwejgejig Bezhigoogizhiik, which suggests “therapeutic horses.” Manitowabi says within the article that the challenge is designed across the horse’s “skill to help with psychological wellness restoration from points like nervousness, despair, aggression and habit.”

There can be group classes for members of the First Nations communities of Manitoulin Island, together with youth camps.
